Samsung and LG unveil new Flexible Batteries

Samsung and LG unveiled prototypes of new batteries at the InterBattery 2015 exhibition in Seoul, South Korea. Both Samsung and LG showcased flexible batteries that could shape the future of wearable devicess and set a new benchmark for other companies to follow.

Samsung showcased flexible band-shaped batteries. Dubbed "Stripe" and "Band", the company claims that these batteries will have a range of applications for wearable devices such as usage in T-shirts, and barrettes. The Band has been developed to be attached to smartwatch straps, while the Stripe is a bendy strip with an ultra-slim waistline of 0.3mm.

Samsung claims that the design in the aforementioned cells improves the battery life by up to 50 percent. But its capacity isn't sufficient to make it fit for use in smartphones and smartwatches yet, the company noted. As for its durability, the company has managed to mould the batteries to the curvature of the human wrist and noted that the batteries were able to withstand 50,000 bends in test conditions.

LG also showcased a flexible battery at the InterBattery 2015 exhibition. Dubbed the "wire battery," the cells can be made to bend into a circle of 15-mm radius, which the company claims, is twice as efficient than a typical battery in its range. Its wire-shaped body also makes it fit for use in wearables. The batteries are not conceptual, and will be available in the market eventually.

An LG representative said that the company has been working on the wire battery since 2013. Samsung hopes that it will be able to deploy the new batteries for commercial applications by as early as 2017.

Apple to remove the Home button in iPhone 7

home-buttonlesss iphoneApple is planning to change the design of its next iPhone. It has been rumoured that the next iPhone model, iPhone 7, may not have a physical home button.

The addition of 3D Touch technology may provide Apple with a way to eliminate the home button on the phone and use the additional space to make the screen bigger or make the device smaller. Eliminating the home button would allow Apple to cut out part of the bezels to make the iPhone's screen larger while keeping the design relatively small and thin.

Apple's fingerprint reader, which is used to unlock the iPhone and authenticate purchases with Apple Pay, currently resides in the home button. Apple could move the TouchID sensor to the side of the phone. Apple has also filed a patent application that describes a system in which a fingerprint sensor could be embedded in the screen itself.

Piper Jaffray’s analyst, Gene Munster, wrote in a recent note that Apple may do away with the Home button, increase the screen size, improve the battery life, and finally switch to sapphire for the screen. He also wrote “As many have speculated, the addition of 3D Touch may provide Apple with a way to eliminate the home button on the phone.” Munster added that a home-buttonless iPhone has a 50 percent chance for the iPhone 7.

Digitimes, a Taiwan-based publication reported in June that Apple is making an iPhone with a home button built into the iPhone's screen. Apple Insider reported the same citing its own sources, but also said an iPhone without a home button wouldn't launch before 2017.
